Excerpt from Rousseau and Romanticism
On its negative side my argument is directed against this undue emphasis on the law for thing, against the attempt to erect on naturalistic foundations a complete philosophy of life. I define two main forms of naturalism on the one hand, utilitarian and scientific and, on the other, emotional naturalism. The type of romanticism I am studying is inseparably bound up with emotional naturalism.
This type of romanticism encouraged by the naturalistic movement is only one of three main types I distinguish and I am dealing for the most part with only one aspect of it. But even when thus circumscribed the subject can scarcely be said to lack importance; for if I am right in my conviction as to the unsoundness of a Rousseauistic philosophy of life, it follows that the total tendency of the Occident at present 13 away from rather than towards civilization.

Rousseau and Romanticism Classic Reprint Irving Babbitt 9781332591411 Books Reviews
A very comprehensive account of the influence of Rousseau on the Romantic Movement. His influence extended in many directions, including literature, philosophy and sociology. (This book is an edited paperback)
Rousseau is arguably one of the most influential thinkers of all time. 'The French Revolution' has the name Rousseau written all over it. Babbit reads Rousseau in relation to a number of central themes, the Classic and Romantic, Romantic genius, Romantic imagination, Romantic morality the ideal, Romantic love, Romantic irony, Romanticisim and nature, Romantic melancholy. He in effect reads the history of Western Mankind from the eighteenth century onward as extension of and parse on Rousseauian thought. Here his goal is not celebratory but more wary of the excesses engendered by this movement. In the course of this however he provides insight into a whole range of thinkers.
Not Babbitt's greatest work. Well-written, but repetitive and sonorous. Especially for those who've read Democracy and Leadership, which is a far superior book. Babbitt should be read, but not this volume.
Hatred of the French Revolution is the beginning of wisdom.
